Nite Bjuti is a jazz adventurism trio of Candice Hoyes, Val Jeanty and Mimi Jones (artists/producers). They weave threads of experimentation and heritage into storytelling through voice, double bass, electro percussion, turntables, and Haitian drums. They animate narratives centering Black women across time, accessing visual art, vodoun, archives, sexual expression, reproductive freedom, and respectability politics. The single cover is creative directed by Hoyes and shot by Mylo Butler. Nite Bjuti delves into the spiritual intimacies of Black life, as the three producers hold each others’ gaze across a midnight dining table.
The trio nurtures the seed of an idea that originated in their 2020 collaboration with Wayne Shorter. Hoyes amplifies the sounds of inner voices as well as ancestral voices silenced by systems of racial and gender oppression. Jeanty and Jones blend blues, Afroelectronica, contemporary West African and Caribbean dance to etch towering sonic landscapes.
Through this radical recording, Nite Bjuti pursues the wild dimensions of their sonic conversations that extend the jazz tradition, leaving a signature sound of cinematic clarity and human connection in their wake.
